eSports launches at Nevada schools

Updated: Apr 5, 2019

Students from SLAM Academy - Nevada in Henderson were able to compete online with students from SLAM Academy - Miami in Academica's eSports League. Schools participating include:

SLAM Academy Nevada

SLAM Academy Miami

MATER Middle/High School

MATER Academy Cutler Bay

Doral Academy of Nevada - Red Rock

This exciting initiative, brought to life by Ralph Krauss, is the first of its kind in Southern Nevada. According to ESPN, eSports is massive: and growing. With national carriers like ESPN and TNT broadcasting the games; major NBA and NFL power brokers fielding teams; and international sponsors like Mastercard, Toyota, and Intel; eSports is rapidly sweeping the nation. Last year, an estimated 200 million people watched the League of Legends World Championship Series at the same time. That's almost twice as may people as watched the 2018 Super Bowl, and it didn't involve a television network: it was hosted online on Twitch, an Amazon-owned, live-streaming service that is becoming just as influential as any cable network. Coupled with billions of dollars in scholarships available at prestigious universities such as Columbia College in Missouri; Robert Morris University in Chicago, IL; and over 18 other schools as well; the future is here.
